WHAT: San Diego Walk for Water
WHERE: DeAnza Cove, Mission Bay (San Diego)
WHEN: March 22, 2009 (World Water Day) 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
WHY: The world water crisis is one of the most significant public health issues of our time. One-third of the Earth’s population lives in “water-stressed” countries and that number is expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades. Often water has to be carried long distances to the house which takes extraordinary time and effort, a burden borne mainly by women and children. PCI’s San Diego Walk for Water is inspired by the 3 - 6 mile journey women and children make every day to obtain water in order to ensure survival for their families. Participants in this 5K walk will be asked to carry water jugs in an effort to provide a symbolic and educational experience for the walker.
WHO: PCI has been working closely with a committee of high school students to plan and execute PCI’s San Diego Walk for Water. The committee represents students from La Jolla Country Day School, The Bishop’s School, Francis Parker School, San Diego High School (the Sudanese Refugee Center), High Tech High School and Hoover High School. Many more San Diego students, along with their extended families and friends are encouraged to participate in this 5K journey along De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park on the official World Water Day, March 22, 2009 beginning at 10:00 am. Participants will also be involved in a symbolic gesture by signing a letter to the incoming Obama administration, creating a greater understanding that clean water for all global citizens is a vital matter for our country’s agenda.
